Emir of Bauchi Seeks Subsidy on Diabetes Drugs

The Emir of Bauchi, Alhaji Rilwanu Suleiman Adamu, has urged governments at all levels to subsidise diabetes drugs in order to reduce the financial burden on Nigerians living with the condition.

The Emir represented by the Galadiman Bauchi Alhaji Ibrahim Saidu Jahun made the appeal at his palace when members of the Institute for Dietetics in Nigeria (IDN) and the Nutrition Society of Nigeria (NSN), Bauchi State Chapter, held a road walk to commemorate the 2025 World Diabetes Day.

He noted that out-of-pocket expenses for diabetes management remain high, stressing that many patients struggle to purchase essential drugs.

The emir said subsidising diabetes medication would go a long way in improving the well-being of those affected.

He commended the Nutrition Society and its partners for their sustained awareness campaigns on diabetes, its prevention, and how people living with the condition can maintain healthy lifestyles.

The State Chairperson of the Nutrition Society of Nigeria, Comfort Daniel Madaki, said the decision to mark the 2025 World Diabetes Day with public enlightenment activities was to ensure that citizens receive accurate information about diabetes irrespective of their background.

She emphasized the need for individuals to adopt healthier eating habits, balance their meals, engage in regular physical activity, and undergo routine medical check-ups to know their health status.

As part of the activities, the society conducted free diabetes screening at the Specialist Hospital, Bauchi.

The road walk, themed “Diabetes and Well-being,” took participants from the Emir’s Palace through major streets and rounded up at the Government House Bauchi.
