A Bauchi based Civil Society Organisations (CSO), Journalists for Public Health and Development Initiative (J4PD) has commended the Executive Governor of Bauchi State, His Excellency Senator Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed, for his recent approval of six months paid maternity leave for lactating mothers in the state’s civil service.
In a statement issued by the organisation’s Executive Director, Ms. Elizabeth Carr, J4PD described the approval as a landmark decision that underscores the Governor’s deep commitment to the health, wellbeing, and productivity of women and children in Bauchi State.
According to J4PD, the six months paid maternity leave will not only promote exclusive breastfeeding, but also contribute significantly to the reduction of infant and maternal morbidity and mortality rates, in line with global public health recommendations.
“Governor Bala Mohammed has once again demonstrated visionary leadership by prioritising maternal and child health. This decision aligns with WHO and UNICEF guidelines, which recommend exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months of life as a foundation for lifelong health and development,” the statement noted.
The organisation recalled that it had been at the forefront of advocacy for the adoption of six months paid maternity leave in Bauchi State and other parts of Nigeria, as part of its ongoing campaign for gender-sensitive and family-friendly workplace policies.
While applauding the executive approval, J4PD passionately appealed to the Bauchi State House of Assembly to expedite the passage of the enabling bill to give full legal backing to the policy.
“We urge the Honourable Members of the Bauchi State House of Assembly to complement this progressive step by fast-tracking the legislative process. Institutionalising the policy through legislation will ensure sustainability and protect the rights of working mothers and their infants,” the statement added.
J4PD further reaffirmed its commitment to continue partnering with government institutions, civil society organisations, and development partners to promote policies and initiatives that advance public health, women’s rights, and social development in Bauchi State and beyond.
