The House of Representative Committee on health has stated that all health workers especially doctors on locum appointment shall be absorbed to bridge the gap of inadequate human resources for health.

Chairman of the committee Amos Magaji stated this at the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital Bauchi during an oversight visit to the facility.

Magaji said there is inadequate human resources for health in public health facilities in the country which is largely due to medical tourism by the health workers.

“Our medical personnel travel out of the country in large numbers, we cannot stop them but we are making efforts to see that more medical colleges are opened to admit more students”.

He noted that as the doctors and other cadres travel out, the new colleges will graduate those who will fill the gap.

Magaji noted that the ATBU Teaching Hospital have modern equipment to handle complicated cases.

” People should come to Bauchi for their medical treatment, instead of traveling abroad, rounding round has exposed us to the equipments they have”.

Chief medical director of the hospital Dr Yusuf Jibrin said the facility needs more health workers to provide services to the large patient turnout.
