Rotary Club of Bauchi Central Tackles Maternal Mortality with Life-Saving Intervention in Yelwa

BAUCHI, NIGERIA — In a targeted effort to curb preventable maternal and infant mortality, the Rotary Club of Bauchi Central has distributed 100 essential birthing kits to expectant mothers at the Yelwa Primary Healthcare Center ecosystem.

The strategic intervention aligns with Rotary International’s core focus on Maternal and Child Health, directly addressing critical healthcare gaps faced by pregnant women in underserved communities across Bauchi State.

Speaking at the outreach, President of the Rotary Club of Bauchi Central, Rtn. Comfort Attah, highlighted that while medical supplies are vital, sustained health outcomes require comprehensive care and education.

”A clean birthing kit provides a safe start, but a healthy mother secures a child’s future,” Attah stated. “We urge all expectant mothers to prioritize routine antenatal care, balanced nutrition, and timely medical intervention. Safeguarding the lives of mothers and newborns begins with informed healthcare decisions.”

Reinforcing the advocacy message, Past President Pam Dauda emphasized crucial preventive practices, calling for wider adoption of exclusive breastfeeding and strict hygiene protocols.

”Breast milk serves as a child’s initial defense against infections,” Dauda noted. “Coupled with essential hygiene practices like proper handwashing, simple daily actions significantly reduce preventable childhood illnesses and save lives.”

For many women in the Yeluwa community, the escalating cost of basic delivery supplies remains a major hurdle to achieving safe, hygienic childbirth.

According to Hajia Hassana, Head of the Maternal and Child Health Committee, each distributed kit contains critical, sterile supplies—including sterile gloves, umbilical cord clamps, gauze, surgical soap, and delivery mats—designed to prevent infection during delivery at primary health centers or emergency home births.

Beneficiaries expressed profound gratitude for the outreach, acknowledging that the intervention alleviated a significant financial burden for their families.

The Rotary Club of Bauchi Central reiterated its commitment to collaborating with local government authorities, healthcare agencies, and community leaders to ensure that no woman loses her life while giving birth.

Beyond the distribution, the outreach featured interactive health education sessions, personalized counseling, and direct referrals to the Yelwa Primary Health Center for continuous antenatal monitoring.
